Back again for another Photo of the Day post!
Around the Bend
Abandoned in 2006, this hospital was literally walked away from. The owners closed up shop one day and never returned, leaving virtually everything behind. When I explored it in 2010 the building was still mostly intact. Sure, there was a tiny bit of vandalism here and there, but for the most part it looked like it’d been shut down only days before.
Most of the patient rooms were in a round ten-story tower jutting up from one end of the building. Each floor had a nurses’ station in the middle surrounded by rooms on the edges, allowing the nurses to keep watch on all rooms simultaneously. This photo shows the nurses’ station on the right with a crescent of rooms arcing around it.
While the hospital survived its first few years of abandonment mostly unmolested, the following year after this photo was taken was not kind to it. Some local kids broke into the hospital and set a room on fire. While responding to the blaze the fire department broke down the front doors of the building, and with the owners not taking responsibility for it, the doors were never boarded up. Vandals and scrappers poured in and gutted the building. Multiple fires have been set, and after smashing every piece of glass and porcelain in the place the vandals took to the walls and elevator shafts, leaving the building a ransacked shell.
It’s now completely boarded and fenced and slated for demolition later this year.
