One lens is "darker" than the other

Hi Folks -

So, playing with the XG-7 and did an experiment. I have two (three actually, but only two for this exercise) lenses: the 50mm/1.7 Rokkor and a 28 to 70mm/3.5 Vivitar.

When I put the Vivitar on and set it for 50mm and f/11, the auto exposure on the camera selects 1/30 shutter speed. When I put on the Rokkor (50mm at f/11) the camera sets the shutter speed to 1/125.

What gives? Does the fact that the Vivitar is a zoom make it darker (slower)? Is the Rokkor just that much better of a lens? Note that I only had daylight (clear) filters in place; no ND, no polarizing).

Thankx.
