"I almost want to take this picture...but not quite..."

Hi folks -

This is about composition. Now, if I Google “rules of photo composition”, I get 93,300,000 hits in 0.2 seconds. I’ll just assume these are not all photo pages, but that most of them provide between 5 and 10 rules for photo composition, one of which is always the thirds rule. But I digress...

Anyway, there have been times that something has drawn my attention, but I...just...can’ I mean, there’s a lot of things I like: Interesting scene, bright colors, vivid irony, whatever...but when I go to frame it from different angles and distances that thing I like isn’t quite strong enough to make me hit the shutter release.

Anyone ever encounter that? If so, were you ever able to troubleshoot what that missing element was? Or is this a case of too much self-editing? (which is silly with the DSLR, but can be beneficial with the SLR so as to not waste film).
