I was walking to dinner today when an anti-war protest blocked my path out of the newsroom. It's sort of a stretch, but Syria is generally considered to be one of the top-25 most corrupt countries in the world. And if all of the rebels' claims about human rights abuses are true, then Assad's government is a pretty good example of the old saw "absolute power corrupts absolutely."
