My first attempt at shooting Comet NEOWISE. Things didn’t go as planned, but I got it.
I finally had a morning where the clouds would probably cooperate, so I dragged myself out of bed and drove up the street. Normally I would have just walked over, but it was 5:30 AM and I really didn’t feel like putting that much effort into a half mile trip. Turns out, this was a very good choice.
I got set up and fired off a test shot with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 to get a better look at the clouds on the horizon. As soon as the shot was finished, I felt some rain drops. And then some more.
Behind me, a rain cloud popped up out of nowhere and was moving in fast.
I threw my camera in my bag and booked it the half block to my car. The rain was coming down a bit harder now. As soon as I closed the car door, it started pouring.
I drove back home and went back to sleep.
Later in the afternoon I pulled up the test shot I got off and there was the comet! Not the best comet shot, and a little out of focus (like just enough to annoy me, but not enough to totally ruin the shot).
I’ll be giving it one more try on Monday morning, and will be using my 18-300mm lens for a variety of shots. Later in the week, it’ll be visible in the night sky. Those are gonna be the good shots. But for now, this is what I got.
