Bringing kinja into focus, one frame at a time

Advice needed...

I haven’t posted on here in forever, but I think I’m going to start posting more often. I really need a reason to go shoot things besides cars regularly because that’s the only way I’m going to get better. Today I come with one of those dreaded questions about gear. If you want to skip over this post, here’s a nice picture to distract you!

Alright, so... my gear bag currently includes:

  • Canon 7D
  • Canon 40D
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
  • Canon EF-S 18-55 STM
  • Canon EF-S 55-250 STM
  • Rokinon 14mm F/2.8

I really like the range I have to work with using these lenses and having two bodies makes it a lot easier when at car events instead of juggling lenses all the time. My issue is that either I have gotten decent enough to take pictures that have found either a weakness or an actual flaw in my 50mm, on bright shapes when shooting any faster than f/4 or so I will get a ghosted outline(typically purple-ish), I don’t remember it having as much CA as this in the past and it has been dropped once, so I wouldn’t put it out of the question that it is damaged.

The real question though is that I really want to get something to replace it. I like the 50mm for detail shots of cars, such as badges, cool interior things, etc but I feel like getting something different might open me up to a bit different ways of thinking too. If I replace it, I will either be getting the 50mm 1.8 STM, 50mm 1.4 USM, or a completely different length(35, 40, 28, 85?). What are your thoughts on all of that?

A local store will have both Canon 50mm’s in stock next week and I plan on using them side by side to see which is really worth it for me(better glass vs better autofocus and stuff), but I kinda want to keep my options open. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
