A newly-leaked camera module — claimed to be for the iPhone 5S — uses a separated LED flash, a report says. French site Nowhereelse.fr notes that the module for the iPhone 5, by contrast, keeps its LED flash attached via a ribbon cable. A module similar to the new one was seen in an earlier leak, but at the time it was believed to be associated with the upcoming low-cost iPhone.

The 5S is typically expected to upgrade to a 12-megapixel camera paired with a dual-LED flash. The latter could be the reason for separating the flash, since it may have extra hardware demands. Apple might also want to keep the flash further away from the lens, since a more powerful light could potentially blow out images. Keeping a flash distant also tends to produce more flattering lighting and prevent red-eye.
