This past Sunday was the annual Festivals Of Speed car show here in St. Petersburg. It was full of all sorts of shiny eye candy, and a few things I didn’t expect, or ever think I’d see in person.

The big one for me was the Porsche 959. My first love, as far as cars go. I’ve been lusting after it since it came out. When I was first looking over the Veyron, they were having some presentation about the new Porsche Panamera. Over the P.A. system they were talking about Porsche heritage and said something like “blah blah blah as you can see on 959 right over here.”

I literally ran across the field to the Porsche area. There it was. Behind some chains and under a tent. I died. My life was complete. While I stood there in awe, some guys walked by. One dude had a little freak-out over the 959.

One of his friends said “Yeah, but it’s only like a million dollars. Who cares?”

That guy is a moron.

Enough with the spiel and on to the cars!

The header pic was one of a handful on Cobra replicas. This is the weird, awesome headlight from another.

The Porsche 962 that won the 1989 24 Hours of Daytona
Richard Petty’s Superbird! Not a replica, the real one!
Ultima GTR
1977 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4
The awesome folks who owned this let me crawl around inside.
Gated shifter!
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport
Just another Ferrari F40. I feel like I’ve seen so many of these.
It’s the Ferrari The Ferrari! This might be the most expensive thing I’ve ever touched.

And now for the 959. It took me 32 or so years to see one in person. I’d take it over any other car at the show. No. I’d take the La Ferrari and then sell it so I could buy four 959s (there are at least nine for sale right now). Also, please note that the Veyron and La Ferrari were just sitting out and you could walk right up to them. The 959 was behind chains and under a tent. It’s special.

There was one more car there of note. The McLaren 720S. This thing just debuted in Geneva a month ago and won’t get to customers for another six months. While other people were taking pictures of it, I was the jerk who was crawling around on the ground taking pictures. It’s a stunning car. I think it’s the best looking thing McLaren has made to date.

I’d normally just post them here, but I ended up using them for work, so you’ll have to go here to see them.
